There once was a sailor
Called Skippy McGee
He’d been on a ship
Since he was but three
He was skilled on the deck
And adept on the mast
No other sailor
Could climb quite as fast
(Vaudeville, silly?) So, between all these sea shanties and a lot of rewatching The Muppet Show… and maybe those years long ago when I did a couple Gilbert & Sullivan shows.
I mean, truthfully, I make stuff up like this all the time. I sing it, loudly, at my family in little snipped. I just never sat down and wrote it all out and recorded it before. However, I’m not even a little sorry for this one.
😉
Lyrics
There once was a sailor
Called Skippy McGee
He’d been on a ship
Since he was but three
He was skilled on the deck
And adept on the mast
No other sailor
Could climb quite as fast
Born comely and clever
His mates would agree
With only one flaw
Alas, great it would be
For one aspect of nature
Had quite an effect
Which upon the young fellow
Was rather direct.
But when he did what he oughtta
He had to make water
But not indiscriminately
He’d go over the rail
He would go in a pail
And he’d give it right back to the sea.
He will never make Boatswain
For the waves of the ocean
Make trouble for Skippy McGee.
A rough crew of pirates
Attacked them one day
In the hour of rest
While moored in a bay
The fighting was fierce
It was something to see
But it stopped when a rogue wave
Hit Skippy McGee
It jostled the pirates
It jostled the crew
Who ran below deck
Yelling “skippy thank you”
They knew what was coming
Each could guarantee
And soon heard the pirates
Who were trying to flee
For when he did what he oughtta
He had to make water
But not indiscriminately
He’d go over the rail
He would go in a pail
And he’d give it right back to the sea.
He will never make Boatswain
For the waves of the ocean
Make trouble for Skippy McGee.
They got their full cargo
To the bustling port
The sailors were ready
To drink and make sport
But Skippy refused
With a firm decree
That he would be better
There on the quay.
They went out together
In solemnity
When Skippy provided
His apology
The ocean is one thing,
He said to the crew,
But when I’m on land…
Alas …. It is number two.
Oooooo when he did what he oughtta
He had to make water
But not indiscriminately
He’d go over the rail
He would go in a pail
And he’d give it right back to the sea.
He will never make Boatswain
For the waves of the ocean
Make trouble for Skippy McGee.
